Flood Financial Assistance

Waterbury, Conn. — United Way of Greater Waterbury and United Way of Naugatuck Beacon Falls are supporting the communities of Naugatuck, Beacon Falls, Middlebury, Southbury, and Woodbury, through a joint flood response fund that will provide $250 direct assistance to approved applicants impacted by the unprecedented floods that impacted our community on Sunday, August 18th.

The organizations are coming together with the Connecticut Community Foundation, American Red Cross of Connecticut, TEAM Inc., and local municipal health and human service departments to help provide financial resources to impacted individuals and families to use to meet their immediate basic needs of food, clothing, recovery supplies and more.

Kristen Jacoby, president and CPO of United Way of Greater Waterbury, explained, “The damage and disruption we’ve witnessed in these communities is almost indescribable, and the need is very real. Coming together increases the support we can provide to those in need.”

Lisa Shappy, executive director of United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls shared, “It’s heartbreaking to see what people are experiencing.  If you’re not directly affected, you know someone who is.  In our small and tight knit community, we’ve always relied on each other and this time is no different.  This fund is a good way to add our resources to the response and recovery.”

Ms. Jacoby commented, “This flood was unprecedented and will result and both short and long-term implications. For now, we’re focused on the immediate needs of those impacted whether that be food, clothing, remediation supplies or to meet other basic needs.”

The two United Ways and others on the ground will continue to gather information and respond accordingly.
